According to statistics from Vietnam Customs, Vietnam’s tuna exports to the EU as of August 15, 2024 increased by 28% over the same period in 2023, reaching more than US$133 million. Canned tuna is the main export product, accounting for nearly 39% of total export turnover to the EU.
In the first 5 months, canned tuna maintained good growth momentum. However, since June, its exports have been continuously decreasing sharply. Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and Italy have reduced the export of canned tuna from Vietnam.
Processors assume that this decline is resulted from the preferential tariff quota gradually running out and difficulties of processors in the supply of skipjack tuna of pure origin (the main raw material for the canned tuna processing and export industry).
